Are you telling your story?
In today’s increasingly digital world, not telling your story doesn’t simply create a blank space, it gives somebody else the opportunity to fill it. And increasingly, that somebody could be an AI-powered search tool.
For manufacturers, this matters because information about your business is already out there. Your website, social media channels, directory listings, media coverage and customer reviews are all contributing to the digital picture of your business. The question is, are you contributing enough of the right information to that picture?
Your business already has a story
When we talk about your business story, we don’t mean a carefully crafted corporate narrative or a lengthy company history. It is the collection of information that helps people understand your business, recognise your expertise and decide whether they trust you as a supplier or partner.
It could include the expertise of your people, the products you manufacture, the problems you solve for customers, successful projects, new product developments, accreditations, awards, investment in facilities and equipment, innovations, company milestones, opinions on issues affecting manufacturing and examples of the results you have achieved for customers.
Much of this knowledge already exists within the business. The challenge is getting it out of people’s heads and into the public domain in a useful and credible way.
If you don’t regularly share that information, you are leaving gaps in the story.
Why does that matter for AI search?
Recent research found that 51% of B2B buyers now start research with an AI chatbot more often than Google (G2 Answer Economy Report, March 2026). This figure was 29% 12 months ago.
When an AI tool such as ChatGPT or Claude produces an answer about a company, it needs information to draw on. Depending on the platform and the type of search, that information can come from a range of online sources, including company websites, published articles, industry content and other publicly available information.
For manufacturers, this means your online presence is no longer just about helping someone find your website in Google. It is also about giving search engines and AI systems enough reliable, relevant information to understand what you manufacture, which markets you serve, what technical expertise you offer, what makes your products or processes different and why a customer should consider working with you.
If your business isn’t regularly contributing accurate, useful information, you have much less influence over the story and narrative those tools can piece together, and therefore the impression left on potential customers.
You cannot control exactly what an AI tool will say about your business. Nor should you assume that everything it says will be accurate. What you can influence is the quality, quantity and credibility of the information that exists about your business in the first place.
The role of PR in AI search visibility
Being good at what you do isn’t always enough nowadays, and this is where PR has an important role to play. Many successful manufacturing businesses are built on technical expertise, long-standing customer relationships and a reputation for delivering quality. Their customers know they are good. Their employees know they are good. Their directors know exactly what they have achieved. But none of that automatically translates into online visibility.
You might have invested in new machinery or expanded your production facilities but never written about it. You might have an engineer with 30 years’ experience but nobody outside the business knows it. You might have developed an innovative product or manufacturing process but never explained what makes it different. You might have helped a customer overcome a complex production challenge but never shared the results. You might have strong opinions about the future of your industry, from skills shortages to automation and sustainability, but never shared them publicly.
All of that represents valuable expertise. If you don’t communicate it, you are making it harder for potential customers, journalists, search engines and AI tools to discover it.
A strategic PR campaign gives manufacturers the opportunity to share technical expertise, product developments, investment, employee development, customer success stories and interesting points of view in places where customers, stakeholders and prospects will engage.
Now think about your competitors. They might not necessarily have more experience, better products or stronger technical capabilities than you, but if they are communicating more effectively, they may be more visible in search results. Over time, that visibility shapes perceptions and can influence customers deciding which manufacturers to shortlist, contact or trust. When stories remain untold, valuable opportunities to build credibility, brand visibility and trust are missed.
PR isn’t about trying to control every mention of your business online. It is about making sure there is a clear, accurate story to find. A story that reflects who you are as a manufacturer, your core values, your experience, your capabilities and what sets you apart.
By consistently communicating what your business knows, makes and achieves, you can create useful evidence of your expertise that can be discovered by the people who matter to your business, wherever they are searching.
Your story is already being written
The important thing to remember is that you don’t have complete control over your online reputation.
Customers will write reviews. Journalists will write stories. Other websites will mention you. Competitors will talk about their own businesses. And AI systems will continue to interpret the information they can find. But you can make sure your own voice is part of the conversation.
By consistently communicating your expertise, achievements, products and points of view, you give customers and AI-powered search tools a clearer and more accurate picture of your business. Because your manufacturing business already has a story.
